  • Exploiting a Super Loose Straddler

Today, I played 1/3 cash in a separate casino that allows straddles from any position outside of the blinds. The guy to my immediate left was straddling frequently for $6, mostly on the button, and defending his straddle with ATC no matter how big I raised, whether flatting or reraising all-in. If limped to him, he would raise about 20% of the time. I exploited this by limping speculative hands and raising to $45 or $50 with premium hands. If I took his entire stack, he would get another $300 out of his pocket (the max buy-in allowed).

In one hand, I held KK and raised to $45. He called and all the limpers folded, leaving a pot of $109. Flop was J74, two spades. I c-bet $70, and he shoved with the rest of his stack, about $110 on top. He could have 2-pair or a jack or be on a draw, so it was an easy call at that SPR. The turn and river blanked and he mucked.

Another hand, I held AdTd and raised to $33. He called, as did one of the limpers, making a $109 pot. Flop Tc7d2d, giving me both TPTK and a nut flush draw. I bet $45. They both called, so $244 in the pot. Turn 5h. I bet $90 and he shoved for $62 more. The limper folded. Easy call for me with those pot odds. River Qd, so I hit the nut flush. I will never know if he had 2-pair there or if my T was good to begin with.

Later, I made it $40 with KJo and he shoved for over $200. I decided to fold, then he showed J5o, so not only was he bluffing, but I had him dominated.

In a subsequent hand, I raised to $48 with AsJs, and he shoved again for about $220. Given what he showed last time, I had to call this. He had me dominated with AdKd, but I hit a Jd on the turn to suck out.

Final hand, I held Ks2s and limped facing several limpers, then he raised for $41. Two limpers called, and I decided to call too to try to hit a strong flush, putting $176 in the pot. Flop KcJcTc, so top pair poor kicker on a monotone flop. He shoved for $192 and the limpers both folded. I needed about 34% equity to call, and thought he had some hands with just one club with which he would pull that move, so he did. He showed 6c6h, so I was actually ahead until the Ac came on the turn.

In that hand, I would not have been surprised to see him turn over either a royal flush or total air.
